just saw this email at the AUGPhil ML any reactions ??? ------------------------ Dear Friends, I'm asking all on this mail list for some help. Please view the thread below. In a nutshell, apparently there were some disparaging remarks made against Filipino medical professionals on last night's TV episode of Desperate Housewives. (see the remark below). I'm asking all those who believe this situation needs a formal apology from the ABC TV network and must not be left undone. Let's all please flood Larry King's Web site with complaints to be certain he acts on this matter and takes issue with the problem. ted > From: Ted Padova > Date: October 2, 2007 8:53:16 AM GMT+08:00 > To: mindanaobloggers@googlegroups.com > Subject: [Min.Bloggers] Re: Philippines vs Desperate Housewives > Reply-To: mindanaobloggers@googlegroups.com > > I am a foreigner from the USA living here in Davao City and I am in total disbelief of the lack of sensitivity of the ABC network, it's producers, and performers. Something must be done about this immediately. > > I think one of the best sources to inform is Larry King. He has a regular TV show and he has a Web site with easy access to offer comments. I urge all to write a post on Mr. King's web site. You'll find him at: http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form5.html?12 > > What's nice about his site is you won't need a log on password. You can add your comment immediately. > > I just posted my comment as shown below: > > ___________ > > Dear Mr. King, > > I am an American citizen living in the Philippines and want to alert you to a situation that I think would be newsworthy for your broadcast. > > This issue is related to the most recent broadcast of ABC's TV episode of Desperate Housewives. Apparently Teri Hatcher's character last night was quoted as saying something to her OB character that she hopes "he's not a graduate of some Philippine Med School." > > Upon hearing this remark, a good many people in the Philippines are outraged. I dare say that ABC wouldn't let the character say "I hope he didn't graduate from a black or Hispanic college." Yet apparently ABC finds no problem casting aspersions on the Filipino people. > > The reality of medicine as it relates to the Philippines is that the Philipppines is the largest supplier of nurses to the USA from abroad. This year over 5,000 nurses went to work in the USA compared to the next largest supplier in China only providing 200 nurses. Each of the overseas workers need to pass tough medical qualifications tests and almost all of them passed on the first testing. A great testiment to the many fine universities in this country. > > The Filipino people are among the most educated in areas of mdicine and technology. Manila is the most popular medical site for all Asian countires. And people fly to Manila for the most complicated medical conditions from all over Asia. They are not going to Japan, Korea, or Thailand becuase the best in this area of the world is in the Philippines. > > As an American living in a country with some of the most decent and kindest people worldwide, I am outraged by Ms. Hatcher's comments and ABC's total lack of sensitivity. > > I dearly hope you run a special on this issue and invite some of the many well trained medical professionals in the USA who are Filipino citizens working abroad. > > A small measure of your intervention in this issue will go a long way in helping ease the outrage and pain experienced by people in this wonderful country. > > Kindly yours, > > ted padova > > ___________ >> >> Hello all, >> >> I thought it might be good to share this here, if you haven't heard it yet. >> >> If it's not true, good. >> >> It it's true, good luck to Teri Hatcher I hope she doesn't need to go to the hospital anytime soon. =) >> >> >> Thanks, >> >> Maying >> >> >> -----Original Message----- >> >> Dear fellow Pinoy Moms: >> >> Last night, Desperate Housewives, in their season premiere insulted the Philippine doctors. | I dunno... I think we are just overly sensitive. I mean, the Americans also make fun of themselves with "racist" jokes about negroes, mexicans and rednecks. And we do laugh whenever they tell those jokes, so it would be a double standard of we laugh at jokes about them while we can't even take any about ourselves.
Many may argue, "What about the Malu Fernandez thing? Isn't it the same as this?" I say it is not. What Malu did was really below the belt because it was a continuous rant about how she despises OFW culture and would "rather slash her wrist" than be exposed to such. This incident is nothing more than something that we could brush off because it didn't really say "all" it said "some". And you have to admit, some Philippine med schools are very substandard.
We should really learn to lighten up a bit more. Probably laugh at ourselves from time to time. Perhaps, we may learn some things about ourselves that we need to change so that we don't need to laugh at ourselves ever again. |
 | true.
the malu fernandez issue is very different from this tv series
when i saw the video, i didnt get offended, why? for me its only a joke :) and its only a tv series. sometimes they do that in some movies, but its only just on the boob tubes. |
 | the trend right now in america is really startling, surely its the writers and the producers that green lighted this joke are those to that should be getting the sharp-end of all our comments. I feel a bit tinge of anger toward this joke because, Godwilling i will be soon a professional[sort of]. And the anger also springs form the fact that my father is an OFW, and pretty soon some of my friends from high-school will too, doing manual labor that foreigners are too lazy to do. Get it right america, be nice to all the help, because the week will inherit the earth, and on top of the food chain will be all those people you looked down on. Americans have Mexicans as gardeners, Indians working in High Tech services and Filipinos taking care of your sick and old because your families don't do it themselves. It may not be now it may not be now it may not be tomorrow, but we will have the last laugh. |
 | personally, I'd rather not be upset by something like this. these same US TV writers also malign jews, arabs, hispanics, koreans, catholics, muslims, born again christians, middle managers, rednecks, republicans etc. equal opportunity potshots kumbaga. sure, it is an indication of ignorance and mild racism but not enough for me to get my feathers ruffled. we're bigger than that.
but then again, i am not a product of a Philippine medical school. i can imagine why some of our medical professionals are upset. we've got great med schools and great medical practitioners and they're the ones with the most rep to lose. however, can we categorically state that we don't have any diploma mills in the medical education industry?
in similar repostings of the Desperate Housewives snafu across the blogosphere, i've seen DH compared to Malu Fernandez. Personally, no comparison. in the Fernandez article, she harps constantly about OFWs, mercilessly and with absolute prejudice. Teri Hatcher's line doesn't compare. For non-PC me, it's akin to someone saying kuripot ang ilokano, or the french are rude.
my two cents' worth. |
 | true its funny, true its only on tv, but anyone in the call center industry here in manila esp in tech support can tell how you "great it is" working with the people created by the same god, whose blood is also red in that country...having said that (pinaganda ko lang pero marami sa kanila medyo shunga pag dating sa utak) er the word gullible comes to mind and if it's just the beginning. |
 | isn't it more refreshing to get back at them through the skills we have learned here, and actually contribute to the success of this country, rather than get an apology from them [the ABC TV Network and Teri Hatcher]? well, think about it, what if they do apologize, then what? hindi naman sila titigil magsulat ng mga jokes tungkol sa iba't ibang bansa, religion, culture, at sa iba't ibang lahi eh. |
 | true, and ROBERT LOPEZ, part filipino, did co-create and write, EVERYBODY'S A LITTLE RACIST in avenue q and truly the joke is on them merely because they would prefer not to be physical therapists, nurses, and doctors, so the care for their, children, sick, and elderly is commonly in ours! |
 | nag aplogize na daw ang ABC ngayon, may letter na.. kapapalabas lang sa ABS CBN Newsbreak |
 | nag aplogize na daw ang ABC ngayon, may letter na.. kapapalabas lang sa ABS CBN Newsbreak would be nice if was posted on their website? do you have a link, or youtube? besides, a note from my wiser and less inflamed sister (sister to my wiser and very level headed boyfriend), if the allied medical filipino professionals i.e. the physical therapists, nurses, medical technicians, pharmacists, and doctors were to do more than yap yap yap and yap, would they stop working for say like half a day? in protest? and see how this would affect their medical industry to say the least to political correctness? THE SCHOOL DOES NOT MAKE THE DOCTOR, NOR THE STUDENT, hopefully, this is a wake up call FOR ALL allied medical schools (not just in the phils) to improve their standards as well, if nothing else it would be for the betterment of the industry and for the good of the patients which is what we are supposed to do anyway instead of trying to relate to very petite, very glamorous, housewives, in a middle class suburb...when in fact the normal american housewife is neither petite, glamorous, and well all else break with the petite comment |

 | Wow, talk about insecurity. So what if one character was portrayed in some fictional TV in a negative light? Boo hoo! Maybe it hit a nerve? So what?! Reality check, 99% of the world does not care!! What the world cares about it the actual character and competence of Filipino doctors and nurses in the real world and not in some make believe TV show.
It is a waste of energy that would be better placed on healing people. These people are intelligent and should have known better! Oh yeah I forgot if they win this lawsuit they'll get 500K USD!
Go figure. |
